Course Overview

The study programme is designed to provide you with the basic skills, knowledge and understanding required for entry into the Public Services (uniformed) e.g. Police, Military, Fire Service, Health Service and HM Customs.

The programme consists of a combination of classroom-based taught lessons; visiting speakers actively employed in the Public Services and practical and physical activities for example leadership and teamwork tasks in Thorpe Woodlands and Tunstall Forest and local parks.

The qualification prepares you for employment in the Public Services, develops team skills, leadership skills and a wide range of employability skills relevant for a broad range of sectors in the world of work. You will also undertake 30 hours of work experience or work related learning. Assessment on the course includes written coursework, presentations and two externally set exams of one hour each. One exam will be in January and the other in May.

All students who have not achieved a grade C or grade 4, or above in GCSE English and/or maths will need to study an English or/and maths qualification alongside their chosen main qualification.

4 GCSEs at grade D (grade 3) including English Language/functional skills English & maths, interview and suitable reference.

Course Highlights

This study programme introduces and develops skills required in the civilian and public service work place.

You will learn both in and out of the College, undertaking voluntary work, which will give you first-hand experience of the public service industry and enhance your job prospects.

There is the opportunity to take part in practical activities to build your leadership and teamwork skills.

Next Steps

69% of students completing the course progressed to further study within the college, including the level 3 Public Services programme. 9% went on to apprenticeship programmes.

Tuition Costs

No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16 – 18 on 31 August 2018.

Level 2 is a brilliant introduction in to Public Services. I particularly enjoyed the friendly environment and support was given to me when I required it. I have now progressed on to the Level 3 Public Services course.
