Course overview

This course is designed to teach you the basics of the Japanese language including key vocabulary and grammar. It would be suitable for anyone intending to take a holiday in Japan or wants to do business there or just has a general interest in the language and culture.

The course will include how to greet people, order food, ask for directions, improve your conversation skills and develop your reading and writing.

The course is open to both new and returning learners.

You will need a pen and notebook. In addition, students enrolled on the course will be expected to buy a textbook (“Japanese for Busy People 1 – Revised 4th Edition” (2022). This is the latest version of this popular textbook and is available in two versions – the “kana version” for those who already know both hiragana and katakana and the “romanised version” for everybody else.

If you are confused by this or have any other questions about the course, please do email the course tutor, Alan Gross, at alangross@suffolk.ac.uk. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get the textbook before the first lesson as the tutor will be able to make copies.

Enrolment end date: Please note that the enrolment for this course closes 3 working days prior to the start of the course. Unfortunately, it is not possible to process late enrolments after that point.
