Land-based learners were put in the spotlight at the annual Suffolk New College awards and showcase evening.
During this occasion, top performing students from across the four college campuses were rewarded for their efforts throughout the year.

A total of 31 accolades were handed out during a ceremony that took place at Rope Walk in Ipswich.
Of those, learners based at the Suffolk Rural campus who study on land related courses received a clutch of awards.
They included Ethan Scott, 16, from Great Finborough near Stowmarket. He received the horticulture student of the year award. On gaining this award he said: “I like being outdoors. I enjoy learning new skills and I want to have my own landscaping company in the future. I was shocked (to win).”

Ethan’s mum, Kim Whiter, said: “I’m really proud (of Ethan). He is enjoying college more than school. He is following his passion. Maybe one day we might see him at Chelsea.”
Sofia Circelli, 20 from Kesgrave received the top floristry prize. Sofia said: “It’s been really good at college. Really enjoyable. I like floristry because of the reactions you get (to my work). Winning the award was a boost to my confidence.”

Antoinette Fox, 20, from Ipswich won the animal studies learner of the year. She said: “I like how I have developed since I started. Next for me is university where I will study wildlife and ecology. Winning this award means a lot.”

Chloe Attridge from Stanton near Bury St Edmunds won the equine learner of the year prize. She said: “It was a great honour to win.”
Her dad, Lee (also form from Stanton said: “From our point of view, since going to college, Chloe has grown so much in confidence.”

And Alfie Scott – who was unable to attend – was crowned farming student of the year.
Alfie, 19, from Ipswich is studying on an agricultural engineering T Level. Alfie said: “There is a sense of community (in farming). I was honestly quite surprised (to win). Hopefully this will help me in the future.”
Principal and chief executive officer of Suffolk New College Alan Pease was master of ceremonies. During his speech, Mr Pease reflected on the recent visit of the prime minister to the college and outlined some of the exciting developments in recent months that include the creation of an upgraded animal centre as well as news of a new campus building in Leiston.

He said: “We recently had the distinct honour of hosting the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer. His words of praise for our college community – and especially our learners – was truly uplifting.
“During these awards, we carry that same spirit of pride and celebration as we reflect on the incredible and inspirational accomplishments that our students have made in what has been a truly outstanding year.”
All winners received prizes or cash worth up to £150.00, a goodie bag and a certificate.
Every single prize was sponsored by a local or national company.
One sponsor was Anne and David Baalham. Their son and brother (Mark) – was a former student of the College who sadly passed away. They have sponsored an award in Mark’s memory for 40 years.

Another sponsor was Alec Bird – a director of Tru7 Group – a construction services business based in Kesgrave. Alec said: “We believe the partnership between education and industry is very important. We need to build career paths and offer opportunities to young people and it’s great to support the college.
“Suffolk New College is a fantastic institution filled with very passionate people,” he added.
Food was provided by learners who are currently on courses studied via the Suffolk Centre for Culinary Arts.
Students Lily Kemp, Indigo Kirby and Daryas Mustfai treated the 300 guests to a series of live music performances.
