Course information
The RHS Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Garden Planning and Applied Propagation is aimed at progressing the development of those within the horticulture industry, those who have a specialist interest in the supervision and development of gardens and landscapes, and those that are looking for personal development to change careers or develop transferrable skills.
Course structure
The course is theory-based and requires attendance on site, 1 day per week. Further home study and revision is required to successfully achieve the qualification.
A work placement within a horticultural setting is advised.
The qualification is made up of two units that contain eight topics. Subjects studied on the course:
- The development of plant knowledge and plant identification skills.
- Plant specification, selection and cultivation for landscaping and nursery.
- The role of plants in a designed landscape
- Managing plant propagation
- Garden Styles and developing planted areas
- Horticultural Heritage
- Garden Management
- Plant Knowledge
Assessment methods
Learners are required to complete and achieve two examinations, which will take place in February and June.
Progression opportunities
This certificate is a standalone qualification, but it can also be taken in conjunction with the RHS Level 3 Certificate in Practical Horticulture, which would be a total of 2 days on site per week.
There is also the opportunity for learners to complete the RHS Level 3 Certificate in Practical Horticulture and RHS Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation to achieve the RHS Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture.
