Course information
The RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development, provides learners with a solid theoretical grounding. This offers an understanding of the science of plants, such as how they function, nutrition, health, adaptations, and various planting styles.
Learners will also develop an understanding of the horticultural industry and the vital role plants play in enhancing biodiversity.
Course structure
The course is theory-based and requires attendance on site, 1 day per week. Further home study and revision is required to successfully achieve the qualification.
A work placement within a horticultural setting is advised.
The qualification is made up of two units that contain four topics. Subjects studied on the course:
- Plant science
- Plant health
- Plant nutrition
- Plant specification
- Planting styles
- Horticulture and society
- Biodiversity
Assessment methods
Learners are required to complete and achieve two examinations, which will take place in February and June.
Progression opportunities
This certificate is a standalone qualification, but it can also be taken alongside the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture, which would be a total of 2 days on site per week.
Learners can achieve the Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture if they successfully achieve both RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development and RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture.
