Course overview

This course is the perfect starting point for anyone that is passionate about working within a veterinary practice, providing support and care for animals that are in a clinical setting.

During the course, you will gain specialised knowledge and skills that relate to a supporting role within a veterinary practice, including practical animal husbandry and care skills and customer service. As a specialised course, you should finish with the ability to assist qualified veterinary staff as well as provide owners with relevant, accurate advice for the care and management of their animals.

If you have not yet achieved a Grade 4 or above in English and Maths, or have not been able to gain a placement required for the Level 3 Diploma, this would be the starting point for those that are committed to a career in veterinary nursing, or animal science.

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Basic Nursing Treatments
  • Infection Control
  • Parasitology
  • Anaesthesia & Fluid Therapy

Course structure

  • 1 year in duration
  • Full-time programme, with attendance 3 days per week, on-site for face-to-face delivery, including Personal Development, English and Maths
  • The other two days of the week should be committed to work experience in a veterinary practice to apply your learning and develop your skills further, and home-directed study.

Assessment methods

  • Portfolio of evidence per unit, which include written theory and practical assessments
  • Practical assessments will include demonstrations, routine tasks, and oral questioning
  • Exam for Anatomy and Physiology

Progression opportunities

To undertake further study at Level 3, you must have achieved Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths.

This qualification would allow you to gain employment in an assistant role within a veterinary practice.

Please note, this qualification is equivalent to a GCSE in Science.
