    Candidates will hold Level 2 qualifications including GCSEs of grade C and above in English, maths and Science.

    You will also be able to work comfortably at Level 3. Previous experience and qualifications will be taken into account.

    Entry will be subject to a successful interview with a member of the Arboriculture team.

    Course Overview

    This course is based at our Suffolk Rural (Otley) campus. Fast Track to Industry.

    The Level 2 Certificate in Arboriculture aims to:

    • Provide learners with the opportunity to acquire the essential skills, knowledge and understanding required for employment in forestry and related industries, and to enable them to progress to advanced study
    • Provide a stimulating and supportive learning environment for learners to develop their potential contribution to forestry and associated industries
    • Develop underpinning knowledge within the subject area, by promoting and encouraging the development of new techniques and learning activities

    The practical elements of the course are taught offsite in realistic working environments. The main component of the course is a Level 2 Certificate in Arboriculture.

    Course Start Date

    Course start dates; September 2022, January 2023 and April 2023.

    Whilst undertaking Arboriculture learning it is important that learners understand the inherent physically demanding nature of the course. It is therefore important that students inform the college of any relevant long or short term medical condition to allow appropriate risk assessment to ensure your safety during learning. This can be disclosed either on enrolment or raised to your teaching team. All information disclosed in this regard will be treated confidentially.

    Course Highlights

    The qualification covers the following topics:

    • The interaction of soil environments and woody plants
    • Woody plant physiology
    • The supply, planting and aftercare of woody plants
    • Principles of tree surgery operations
    • Tree inspections and statute and common law applied to trees
    • The principles of aerial tree surgery and ground based arboricultural operations

    The course will prepare you practically for the following NPTC units:

    • 2003 Chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting (Previously CS30)
    • 2004 Felling and processing trees up to 380mm (Previously CS31)
    • 2013 Climb trees and rescue (Previously CS38)
    • 2108 Aerial cutting of trees with a chainsaw (Previously CS39)

    You may also have the opportunity to undertake the following (subject to availability);

    • Emergency First Aid certificate
    • LANTRA Basic Tree inspection

    Due to the nature of the course there will be a large amount of offsite training. Therefore, you will be expected to use your own vehicle to travel to this external site.

    Next Steps

    After the course you will be able to continue onto other courses or work in the arboriculture industry. Many students who enrol on one of these courses go on to set up their own businesses, based on the training that they have received.

    We will prepare you with the requisite skills for immediate entry into industry to do jobs such as:

    • A self-employed arboricultural contractor
    • An arborist for national parks and gardens
    • An arborist for local authorities
    • Woodland Management
