SNC Motor Vehicle graduate turned award‑winning BBC journalist and CEO of Cancer Support Suffolk
Mark Murphy MBE studied Motor Vehicle Studies at Suffolk New College between 1980 and 1985, later progressing into management during the final part of his course. Those years gave him a strong grounding in practical skills, discipline and leadership, qualities that would shape an unexpected but remarkable career path.
After leaving the motor trade, Mark joined the BBC, beginning a journey that would span 33 years. He rose to become a Senior Broadcast Journalist, reporting, presenting and shaping stories across the region. His work earned national recognition, including six Radio Academy Awards, among them UK News Broadcaster of the Year (2003), a testament to his talent, dedication and impact in journalism.
In 2023, Mark was awarded an MBE, honouring his contributions and achievements across his career.
Today, Mark leads Cancer Support Suffolk as CEO, bringing his communication expertise, leadership experience and commitment to community support into the charity sector. His work continues to make a meaningful difference to people across the county.
Reflecting on his time at college, Mark credits his studies, particularly the management elements, with teaching him valuable skills that supported every step of his professional journey.
