Course overview

This two‑year Level 3 T Level qualification (equivalent to three A Levels) is designed for learners progressing from GCSE study who want a hands‑on, industry‑focused route into engineering. The programme combines classroom theory, practical workshop training and a mandatory 45‑day (315‑hour) industry placement with an engineering employer, giving you the technical knowledge and real‑world experience needed for skilled employment or higher‑level study.

What you will learn

Core Engineering Principles (Year 1)

You will build a strong foundation across the essential engineering sciences before specialising in electrical and electronic systems.

  • Engineering Science & Mathematics — Applied algebra, trigonometry, matrices, mechanical principles, force calculations and introductory thermodynamics.
  • Materials & Science — Physical and electrical properties of metals, polymers and semiconductors, including testing methods and material degradation.
  • Technical Communications — Reading and producing 2D/3D technical drawings, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Working in the Industry — Health and safety regulations (COSHH, HASWA, PUWER), quality systems, commercial awareness and engineering business operations.

Occupational Specialism: Electrical and Electronic (Year 2)

Your second year focuses on diagnosing, installing, maintaining and repairing electrical and electronic systems.

  • Circuit Construction & Power Systems — AC/DC circuit design, power conversion systems, distribution networks and electronic control equipment.
  • Fault Detection & Diagnosis — Using oscilloscopes, multimeters and signal generators to trace faults, isolate circuits safely and identify component failures.
  • System Maintenance & Repair — Removing, repairing, recalibrating and replacing circuit boards, sensors, motors and wiring assemblies.
  • Testing & Re‑commissioning — Ensuring repaired systems meet technical specifications, safety requirements and operational tolerances before returning to service.

Industry Placement

A minimum 315‑hour (45‑day) placement with an engineering employer gives you the chance to apply your skills in a real workplace, gain confidence and understand industry expectations.

Assessment Structure

  • Two written core exams (Engineering Concepts and Math/Science)
  • Employer‑Set Project (ESP) applying core problem‑solving skills
  • Practical synoptic assignment assessing your electrical/electronic maintenance and repair competence

Progression Routes

This T Level supports progression into:

  • Higher Education — University degrees in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics and related fields (T Levels carry UCAS points equivalent to 3 A Levels)
  • Higher/Degree Apprenticeships — Level 4–6 apprenticeships in electrical engineering or industrial maintenance
  • Direct Employment — Skilled roles such as electrical maintenance technician, auto‑electrician, panel builder or field service engineer
