Course overview

Who is this course for?

  • This course is for people who are starting out in the equine (horse) industry.
  • Previous experience would be beneficial, but you will mostly need a strong passion for working with horses.
  • You will need to be ready to work outside in all kinds of weather. Horses need care every day – even when it’s raining or cold!

What will I learn?

  • You will learn how to work safely around horses (Health & Safety)
  • You will undertake one other unit that provides you with basic knowledge and hands-on skills in Horse Care.
  • You may work with a wider range of animal species in our Animal Centre as part of your course.
  • Personal Development will also be part of your study programme.

What will I need?

  • You will need Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as riding/yard boots, a polo shirt and a sweatshirt.
  • Outdoor clothing (e.g. waterproof coat and trousers) would be beneficial as you will be working with horses in all weather conditions.
  • You will get further guidance and links to a shop for your PPE when you enrol.

How will my course be delivered?

  • You will be at college 1 to 2 days per week, 1 day for your Equine (Horse) Care lessons and one day for GCSE English and/or Maths (if required).
  • You will need to take part in a work experience placement.
  • You will also need to do some home study to prepare for your assessments.

How will I be assessed?

  • One multiple choice exam.
  • Practical and written tasks that are completed in college under assessment conditions.

What would I get at the end of the course?

  • You will have a Level 1 Award in Equine (Horse) Care with a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.

What can I do after my course?

Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies – pathways may include Animal, Agriculture, Equine and Horticulture.
