Dear Parents and Carers,
We are aware that yesterday’s announcement in the news regarding two young people receiving treatment in hospital after contracting meningitis B will have caused concern for many families, and we wanted to take an opportunity to offer reassurance.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said of the two confirmed cases in Suffolk that “the risk to the wider public remains low” (BBC News).
Nevertheless, we feel it is important that all families feel informed and prepared in terms of what to look out for. The wellbeing and safety of our learners is always our top priority.
Symptoms to be aware of
Meningitis symptoms can develop suddenly. If your young person develops any of the following, please seek medical advice immediately:
- A high temperature (fever)
- Vomiting
- A severe headache
- A stiff neck
- A dislike of bright lights
- Drowsiness or unresponsiveness
- Seizures (fits)
- A rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it – please note that a rash does not always appear, and you should not wait for one before seeking help
If you are concerned, contact your GP, call 111, or in an emergency call 999 immediately.

UPDATED: Vaccination information
- The MenACWY vaccine is routinely offered to young people in Year 9. If your young person missed this vaccination, they may still be eligible to receive it – young people can access this vaccine up until the age of 25.

- The MenB vaccine is currently available to young people with birth dates that fall between 01/09/2007-31/08/2008
