Course overview

This engaging and supportive one-year programme is the perfect gateway qualification for learners interested in developing their skills and knowledge to progress their journey in animal care. Combining classroom-based theory, interactive activities, and hands-on practical experience, students will work with a wide range of animals in our newly-upgraded animal centre—including meerkats, exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rodents, and livestock.

Designed to help learners overcome social, emotional, and academic barriers, this course provides tailored support in small, focused classes. Learners will also receive dedicated help with maths and English, aiming to meet the entry requirements for progression onto Level 1 programmes within the college.

Key units include Health and Safety, Working in the Land-Based sector, Understanding Animals, Animal Accommodation, Animal Handling, and Feeding. Throughout the course, students will build a comprehensive portfolio of work as they gather evidence to meet grading criteria and successfully complete the qualification.
