Suffolk New College Sports Centre

14 September 2020 - Notice:

Due to the COVID pandemic Suffolk New College sports centre is opening on a phased return. We are gradually introducing certain activities from our sports clubs to our dance classes, who can safely run their clubs under recommended safety guidelines. Unfortunately not all our activities can return at this moment in time, but this is to ensure we can keep our staff, students, and customers safe.

The following restrictions are currently in place:

  • There will be no children's parties or activities for the remainder of 2020.
  • We are currently only open to clubs who have approval to re-start from their governing bodies, and who can safely operate under the current government guidelines
  • Casual badminton has returned, with restrictions in place - see below for details
  • Casual basketball is not available at this moment in time and this will be reviewed regularly
  • Any users of the facility MUST wear a face mask whilst in the reception and toilets, and ensure they keep their social distancing whilst on site

Suffolk New College Sports Centre is located near to the town centre and waterfront and has fantastic facilities, including a four-court badminton sports hall with two full-sized basketball hoops. The sports hall is used for various sports including: badminton, basketball, futsal, netball, tennis, trampolining, volleyball, and many more.

We also have two multi-purpose rooms, available for public use. These rooms are suitable for all kinds of fitness classes, from Pilates to martial arts, and one of our rooms has a mirrored wall and ballet barre, which would suit various styles of dance and exercise. Our multi-purpose rooms are also perfect for conferences, seminars, and birthday parties. Both rooms have air conditioning and smart boards with projectors.

Our sports hall is also available for event hire (conditions apply).

The Sports Centre is fully accessible with a lift offering access to the two multi-purpose rooms and bar upstairs.

The Sports Centre is available for community use in the evenings after 5pm and on weekends.

Children's Activities

School Holidays

During the school holidays we offer a range of children's activities. These activities vary and include a number of different options, including Sports mornings, Trampoline courses, Baby Bouncers (trampoline and inflatable fun for 2-5 year olds), Double Mini Trampolining (for those parkour fans), Soft Tennis, Table Tennis, Inflatable Fun and Arts & Crafts, Inflatable Fun, and family sports days.

The Sports Centre is also open to casual turn up and play, equipment is available for Badminton, Basketball, and Table-Tennis.

Baby Bounce Trampolining and Inflatable Fun

Trampolining and inflatable play for young bouncers (18 months to 5 years).

We run some casual sessions for toddlers to access trampolining whilst having fun jumping on the inflatables.

Information on available sessions coming soon.

Cost: £4.50 per child, Saturdays 9:30am - 10:30am.

Please note: Due to the age of this session, parents may need to get on the trampoline with their children, but steps are by the trampoline for ease of access. Socks MUST be worn to take part in the session.

Numbers are limited so pre-booking is essential by calling the sports centre on 01473 219439 or emailing sportscentre@suffolk.ac.uk.


Casual Trampolining

Casual trampolining is available for £4 on Saturday mornings 10:45am - 12noon, for 5-15 year olds. Pre-booking is recommended as spaces are limited. You can just turn up on the day but cannot be guaranteed a place if full.

All participants must wear socks and clothing with no buttons or zips. Anyone under 7 must have a parent/guardian to stay by the trampolines throughout the session.


Children's Parties

Suffolk New College Sports Centre offers a variety of children’s parties that are perfect for any birthday treat. With a variety of packages, ranging from trampolining to multi-sports, we are sure we will have the right package for you.

All of our parties include: a party pal, Trampoline coach (if relevant), decorations and music, as well as your own private room for any food you want to provide afterwards. Subject to availability, you may be able to access the party room prior to the party to set out your food and drink - please check before the day.

Badminton

No Strings Badminton

Come and play badminton at a relaxed "drop in" session. Sessions are for any ability and no partner is needed. Just turn up and the co-ordinator will get you playing, all equipment is supplied. £5 per person.

Every Wednesday, 20:00 – 22:00


Inclusive Badminton with Activlives

For adults with a learning disability.

Every Wednesday 4:30pm – 6:00pm.

Come and try this great sport in a friendly & welcoming environment! Have fun, improve your fitness, and meet some great people. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and some non-marking training shoes. No need to bring any rackets or shuttles – all equipment will be provided. You don’t have to have played badminton before – a qualified coach will be there to help.

Session fee is £4.00 (first session is FREE).

This session is for adults with a learning disability and is a partnership between ActivIpswich & Special Olympics Suffolk.

Casual Badminton

Casual Badminton is now available for bookings as of the 28th of September 2020, with restrictions in place. We have 4 badminton courts available for casual hire evenings and weekends, all casual bookings can be made up to 7 days in advance. Badminton rackets and shuttlecocks can be hired at the reception desk.

COST: £9.00 for adults and £7.00 for juniors. Please note all bookings have a duration of 55 minutes to allow time for staff to set up or down equipment.

The guidelines in place are as follows;

• Both singles play and doubles play can take place in groups of people from different households, as long as you remain 2 metres apart as far as possible.
• Singles and doubles can be played using all areas of the court, within the respective court markings – if social distancing between adjacent courts cannot be maintained, players should only use the singles court markings.
• We recommend that players do not change ends.
• Players are advised to limit their interactions with anyone outside of the group they are playing in (e.g. players in another group).
• Other than where players are from the same household or part of a support bubble, follow Government advice on staying alert and safe, and:
• Stay at least two metres away from other players (including during play) as much as possible, when taking breaks, and before and after play.
• Do not make physical contact with other players (such as shaking hands or high-fiving).

We will be restricting numbers to a maximum of 4 per court and will be taking casual badminton bookings from Monday 28th September.
