Artists line up for duty by creating arresting mural at Suffolk Police HQ

News overview

A group of talented artists have created an arresting mural for Suffolk Police.

The youngsters all studied at Suffolk New College on an arts foundation course this year.

As part of their programme, they were given an opportunity to work with the force to come up with a design that would help brighten up the café area situated at the Martlesham based headquarters.

During the collaboration, students met up with several members of staff, were given a brief, had a tour of a police museum to gain inspiration and once approved, they painted their piece of work earlier in the year.

The masterpiece was then unveiled at the end of August by Deputy Chief Constable Rob Jones who thanked everyone for their involvement and handed over certificates to all of the artists.

During this presentation, Mr Jones said: “The college has a great deal of creativity and the students came up with this amazing piece of work. The final result is amazing and it’s something we are really proud of. We hope to work on another project with the college in the future.”

Charlie Jackaman-Pegg ,19, from Ipswich was the artistic director of this project. He said: “It was exciting to have an opportunity like this.”

Charlie – who is now of the study illustration at the Norwich University of the Arts added: “This is great for the CV and the experience will help me in the future – hopefully this is the first step into a career.”

Isabel Dowthwaite, 19, lives near Stowmarket. She said: “I’ve not done anything like this before – and I’ve learnt a lot about time management and working with a client. It’s been exciting. I’ve loved my time at the college.”

Helen Armstrong Bland is a lecturer in art and design at Suffolk New College. Helen said: “We had a tour of the facilities to inspire the students. During the tour, we saw some Giles cartoon imagery and this was used as a motivation for the project. It’s been a team effort that has created a lot of energy and a buzz at the police HQ and I’m really proud.”
