Traineeships Programme

Course overview

The government has introduced an exciting new programme called Traineeships, which is designed for those aged 16 to 24 years and in need of some work experience, in order to give you the skills you need and help you move into paid employment.

Suffolk New College has developed a programme that embraces all the opportunities offered by a Traineeship, and is able to support eligible individuals to participate on an 18 week programme that will provide up to 15 weeks of work experience placement, along with classroom-based Functional Skills in maths and English.

The maths and English taught, are an essential part of the Traineeship programme, and are integral to various other types of follow on qualifications, including Apprenticeships.

Course delivery

In order to successfully complete the 18 week Traineeship programme, an individual must complete all elements shown below:


Planned Hours

Induction and work preparation

3 weeks at 12 hrs week

Functional Skills L1 Maths

One morning per week for 14 weeks

Functional Skills L2 English

One afternoon per week for 14 weeks

Work Placement with local employer

15 weeks at 20 hrs

Total Number of Weeks

18 weeks

How is the course assessed?

Your participation on the course will be monitored and supported by your Lecturer and Work Placement Co-ordinator at the College. The maths and English qualifications with be assessed through an online exam and the employer who you will be placed with will give you feedback on your performance in the work experience placement.

Entry requirements:

In order to participate on the Traineeships programme, you must not be currently in education or training and you must be looking for work. In addition, if you are aged 16-18 years old, you must be qualified to below Level 3 and if you are aged 19-24 years old you must be qualified to below Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A-C).


Mode of study – Classroom based delivery for Functional Skills in Maths and English, and work experience placement with a local employer.

Length of Course – 18 weeks, covering 20 hrs per week.

Location – Classroom based delivery will take place at the College’s main campus near the Ipswich waterfront and town centre.
