A teenager from Beccles was ‘over the moon’ after securing a job at his former place of study.
18-year-old Alfie Blanchflower landed a technician role at Suffolk New College On The Coast in Halesworth a few weeks ago.
After school, he started a level two motor vehicle programme at the college in 2024.
Two years on, he passed the course with flying colours.
Just a few weeks after completing it, he interviewed for a technician role in the department where he trained.

On his time as a student, Alfie said: “I found my time at college was much more enjoyable than school. I got to choose the subject I wanted to study and it was more hands on.
“I applied for a job a technician and I was ecstatic when I found out I’d got it. I was working in a restaurant before but always wanted to get into education. I was over the moon when I found out the news.
“I am responsible for health and safety, making sure the practical lessons run smoothly. I assist the tutor and support the students in what they are doing.”
The college was impressed by Alfie, not just as a student, but also for his volunteer work at the East Anglia Transport Museum in Lowestoft.
He visited in 2021 and became a conductor in 2022. Today he’s the head of museum events and a company director.

Alfie explains: “I volunteered (at the museum) as I was looking to learn something new and fill my time. I’d say to other young people, I think its’s a missed opportunity if you don’t volunteer – it opens doors for you.”
And on his future plans he said: “It (Suffolk New College On The Coast, Halesworth) is an excellent environment to study and learn, there is great support and everyone is happy to help. All the staff genuinely care and want the best outcomes for students. Long term I’d love to stay in further education and become a full-time motor vehicle teacher.”
Sherry Storer is Head of Centre at Suffolk New College On The Coast. She said: “Alfie has really blossomed since being with us. We are so proud of his progress and delighted he is now part of our team.”
