Miles Bacon
Uniformed Public Services alumnus now serving with the Grenadier Guards on iconic national ceremonial duties
Miles Bacon joined Suffolk New College to study Uniformed Public Services, completing the two‑year course before progressing into a career with the Grenadier Guards in London. He credits his time at the College as a major stepping stone into military life, giving him early confidence, practical experience, and the discipline needed to excel in basic training.
During his course, Miles took part in a wide range of activities, from sailing and outdoor camps to structured skills development, all of which helped him build resilience, teamwork, and leadership.
He describes the programme as “an amazing experience” that gave him a strong foundation before joining the Army. Entering basic training, Miles felt prepared and ahead of the curve, already familiar with essential standards and expectations.
Now serving in the 9 Company, Grenadier Guards, Miles has taken part in some of the nation’s most iconic ceremonial duties. He has marched in Trooping the Colour; one of the proudest moments of his life; and has stood guard at Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, and the Tower of London.
Each experience, he says, has been “amazing”.
Miles encourages anyone considering a future in the services to take the course, praising the instructors and the practical preparation it provides. He believes the habits learned, punctuality, smartness, personal organisation, and attention to detail, are invaluable both in the military and everyday life. In his words, these skills “put you one step above everyone else”.
