What you will learn

This course is made up of three units. You’ll explore the value of play for babies and young children, how early years settings are managed and organised, and the different roles and responsibilities within these settings.

You’ll learn about:

  • Why play is so important for children’s development
  • Different types of play suitable for babies and young children
  • The adult’s role in supporting play
  • How early years settings are run, including key regulations and legislation
  • How settings help children feel safe and secure
  • The roles within an early years team and how they work together
  • How to reflect on and improve your own practice

To complete the course, you’ll put together a small collection of written assessments to show what you’ve learned.

Pre‑requisite qualifications and experience

You don’t need any previous experience or qualifications to join this course. You will need a good level of written and reading English. This course gives you a basic introduction to childcare in early years settings, including the importance of play, the roles of carers and volunteers, and how early years settings connect with their local community. It covers childcare and development from birth to 5 years 11 months.
