Course information
The Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies (Equine) is a practical, full-time course designed for learners who are passionate about horses but may have limited prior experience or formal qualifications. This programme provides a strong foundation in horse care and equine industry practices, preparing students for further study or entry-level employment.
You’ll gain hands-on experience at our Suffolk Rural campus, working with horses in a supportive and professional environment. The course is ideal for those seeking a career in the equine sector or looking to build confidence and skills before progressing to higher levels.
Course structure
This course is a full-time qualification that runs over one academic year and requires on-site attendance 3 days per week, 1 day of work experience, and 1 day for self directed study.
Assessment methods
Learners will complete theory and practical based assessments across the academic year for each unit. There will also be two multiple choice exams for Health & Safety and Working in a Land Based Industry.
Learners are also required to complete 60 hours of work experience in order to complete this qualification.
Progression opportunities
Upon successful completion, you can:
- Progress to the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Horse Care
- Apply for an equine apprenticeship
- Enter the industry as an assistant yard groom or similar role
In order to progress to Level 2, you would need a Merit at Level 1.
