Student Union donates to two local charities

This week, our new Student Union president Jordan Barry presented cheques to two local charities as the result of fund raising efforts by the College students.

Terry Hagan visited the College from the Chantry Youth Development Initiative to receive a cheque from Jordan.

The Chantry Youth Development Initiative was formed in 1997 to provide sports and educational opportunities to children in Chantry between the ages of 5 to 11. The CYDI’s core activities are basketball coaching and swimming lessons, provided free to those who could not otherwise afford to do participate.

With a lack of community-based activities within Chantry, the work of the CYDI encourages children in the area to get out, meet their friends and learn a new skill. The children follow a basketball syllabus to learn the basic skills of the game along with increasing confidence and physical co-ordination. Donations go towards the hire of sports hall space.

Terry himself coaches basketball on Wednesdays in term time for children. They learn for 40 minutes then play a game for 20 minutes. At the end of each year, the children are awarded their own medal for completing the course.

The swimming lessons take place at Crown Pools, under the eye of qualified swimming instructors over ten, weekly half hour sessions.

The second charity to benefit this week was the Ipswich Sports Club for the Disabled.

Pat Hoy, Club Chair Person for the Sports Club, also visited Suffolk New College to receive a cheque from Jordan. The Ipswich Sports Club for the Disabled provides the opportunity for members to play basketball, New Age Kurling, bowls or simply to turn up and be with friends. The evening takes place on Tuesday nights at Northgate Sports Centre and the Club has its own specialist sports wheelchairs and bowling mats, used by members.
