    2 GCSEs at grade 1 including English and/or maths, or demonstrate the ability to work towards Level 1 in English and maths in an assessment.

    Course Overview

    This course is based at our Ipswich campus.

    Level 1 will suit you if you're starting out and want a good basic understanding of the industry. You want a qualification that can help you with ongoing study or to find your first job in hospitality.

    The aim of the course is to provide you with the basic practical skills, knowledge and confidence in food preparation, cooking, and food and beverage service. You'll develop relevant core skills for a career in the hospitality industry. You'll gain practical experience training in our kitchens where you'll learn how to prepare and cook a variety of fresh foods, customer service and food and beverage service techniques You will complete a number of units from a range that includes:

    Health, safety and hygiene

    Knife skills and how to use kitchen equipment

    Basic cookery: meat, fish, salad and sandwiches, cakes, bread and pastries

    Healthy eating and the hospitality industry

    Food and beverage skills

    All students who have not achieved a grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English or maths will need to study these subjects alongside their chosen qualification.

    Next Steps

    Most Level 1 students choose to move onto study Level 2 qualifications in Professional Cookery,or Food and Beverage Service. However, this will depend on English and maths results and work experience hours attained. Students will have worked on functions and events and will have taken part in competitions and visits, which will assist them in gaining confidence in a range of interpersonal and practical skills so necessary for today’s workplace.

    Tuition Costs

    No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16 – 18 on 31 August 2021.
