    Course Overview

This course is designed to provide you with a sound understanding of English Language, and the ability to communicate effectively. The English Language GCSE assesses both reading and writing skills. This means you will be analysing everything from contemporary novels or Shakespeare’s plays to the everyday speech you might hear in a supermarket. Once you have completed the course you will be equipped to extract information from a range of texts (including one literary text such as a novel or play) and to write in a variety of contexts (both descriptively and creatively). In addition, you will undertake a series of speaking and listening tasks designed to improve your communication skills in situations such as job interviews and individual presentations. You will be assessed through four controlled assessments throughout the year and via examinations; there are two exams, a reading and a writing paper, which are both taken in June. You must be aged 19 and over.
