Course overview

Level 1

Functional Skills qualifications are designed to develop the learner’s ability to represent situations using mathematics, including analysing calculations, solving problems using mathematics, and interpreting mathematics to explain situations. Level 1 is assessed with a non-calculator and a calculator exam which will be taken simultaneously in one sitting totalling 1 hour 55 minutes.

The course covers the following areas:

  • Using whole and negative numbers in practical contexts
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers using a range of strategies
  • Fractions, Decimals ( to 2 decimal places) and Percentages
  • Solving simple ratio problems
  • Solving problems involving money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature
  • Working out areas and perimeters in practical situations
  • Collect, record, and display data in different ways
  • Find the mean (average) and range
  • Using data to assess the likelihood of an outcome

Functional Skills Mathematics qualifications were directly developed in response to employer perceptions as to what constitutes firm grounding in mathematical basics. They are designed to give learners the skills they need to operate confidently and effectively in the workplace and in everyday life.

Functional skills classes will take place once a week and be 3 hours in length.

This course is available either face-to-face or online. For the online courses, learners will need a strong internet connection and a device to access the content (including a camera and a microphone).
