    Course Overview

    Functional Skills qualifications are designed to develop the learner’s ability to represent situations using mathematics, including analysing calculations, solving problems using mathematics, and interpreting mathematics to explain situations. Level 1 is assessed with a non-calculator and a calculator exam which will be taken simultaneously in one sitting totalling 1 hour 55 minutes.

    The course covers the following areas:

    • Using whole and negative numbers in practical contexts
    • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers using a range of strategies
    • Fractions, Decimals ( to 2 decimal places) and Percentages
    • Solving simple ratio problems
    • Solving problems involving money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature
    • Working out areas and perimeters in practical situations
    • Collect, record, and display data in different ways
    • Find mean (average) and range
    • Using data to assess the likelihood of an outcome

    This course will be delivered 3 hours per week (subject to change).
