    You must be aged 19 or older and successfully complete a screening assessment.

    Course Overview

    Functional Skills qualifications are designed to develop the learner’s ability to represent situations using mathematics, including analysing calculations, solving problems using mathematics, and interpreting mathematics to explain situations. Level 1 is assessed in a single, external test, which is 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

    The course covers the following areas:

    • Using whole and negative numbers in practical contexts
    • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers using a range of strategies
    • Fractions, Decimals ( to 2 decimal places) and Percentages
    • Solving simple ratio problems
    • Solving problems involving money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature
    • Working out areas and perimeters in practical situations
    • Collect, record, and display data in different ways
    • Find mean (average) and range
    • Using data to assess the likelihood of an outcome

    Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to select their preferred class time (daytime or evening) at enrolment in August 2018.

    Course Highlights

    Functional Skills Mathematics qualifications were directly developed in response to employer perceptions as to what constitutes firm grounding in mathematical basics. They are designed to give learners the skills they need to operate confidently and effectively in the workplace and everyday life.

    This course gives excellent preparation for those students wishing to progress onto higher level study through encouraging candidates to develop the skills necessary to be competent and confident in their mathematical ability.

    Tuition Costs

    No tuition fees are payable for students who do not already have a GCSE grade C or grade 4 or above in maths.
