    Course Overview

Functional Skills courses and qualifications provide you with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding of communication, which will enable you to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work.

For Level 1 reading you will be developing your skills on locating information, understanding how authors structure and add interest to texts, and understanding how to identify the main purpose of texts. For Level 1 writing, you will be developing your writing skills to write clearly for purpose and audience, using correct grammar and accurate punctuation to make sure that the meaning is clear.

You will take examinations on reading and writing; these are taken within the college but are marked by the examining board, currently City and Guilds. If you are unsuccessful in an exam, you can retake it in the same academic year. You will also take 2 assessments on speaking and listening; these are administered within the college by your English teacher. You must pass all 3 elements to pass the course and gain a qualification.
