Course overview

Whether you are a beginner or more experienced in conducting family history research, this online course will encourage you to consider a range of rich resources, new techniques and creative expression in relation to your research. You will have the opportunity to design and carry out a mini project and to present your work to the class in a format of your choosing.

We will discuss key sources, approaches and themes in family history research. Practical exercises will include an introduction to using libraries, archives and online resources. We will also explore forms of creative writing – such as memoir and the diary – to develop your research and ideas.

This will involve a brief consideration of creative examples of family history in contemporary literature, as well as the unique context of family legacies and local history resources in East Anglia such as The Paston Treasure.

Key outcomes:

  • Identify key resources and techniques for conducting family history research
  • Consider different ways and forms of sharing your research
  • Have an outline plan for pursuing future research or developing your mini project

The course content will include:

  • What is family history research
  • Introduction to resources and approaches
    • Finding what you need
    • Planning a mini research project
    • Language and a sense of place (Cheshire and Norfolk)
    • Creative approaches to mapping your family tree
    • The role of memory and ways of telling
    • further creative approaches
  • Dynasties in fiction/ fictional families
  • Family history and memoir
  • Sharing your story

Enrolment End Date: Please note that the enrolment for this course closes 3 working days prior to the start of the course. Unfortunately it is not possible to process late enrolments after that point.
