Is this the right course for me?
This exciting and challenging course is ideal if you are interested in joining one of the uniformed public services such as the Police Service, Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Fire Service, Prison Service and other uniformed services.
The course has been designed to provide students with the basic skills, knowledge and understanding required for entry into the uniformed public services. The course consists of a combination of classroom-based activities and also includes a mandatory outdoor education and teambuilding programme. You will learn about the roles of the British uniformed public services and the work they do. The course team has developed strong links with public services in the local area. There is a programme of visiting speakers and external visits to enhance classroom delivery.
What do I need to join the course?
- Four GCSEs at Grade D or above, including English Language. Or
- Level 1 qualification in relevant subject
What does the course involve?
You will study the following units in which you will learn about the work of the uniformed public services.
Core units
Unit 3: Public Service Skills
Unit 2: Uniformed Public Service Fitness
Unit 4: Citizenship, the Individual and Society
Specialists Units
Unit 1: Uniformed Public Services Employment
Unit 7: The Value of Sport and Recreation in the Public Services
Unit 10: Crime and its Effects on Society
Can I take any additional qualifications?
HSE First Aid at Work may be available as an additional qualification.
You may be required to carry out additional numeracy and communication studies dependant on your GCSE profile.
How will I be assessed?
Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards.
Each unit will be assessed within the College on the completion of various tasks and assignments to form a portfolio of evidence. There are no external examinations on this BTEC course.
When does term start?
Week commencing Monday 6th September 2010.
How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?
This is a full time course. Normally you will spend 14 hours of tutor directed study every week on the main qualification plus 3 hours Key Skills and tutorials. Students will also engage in a range of curricular activities. Students can expect to spend up to 10 hours a week outside of college time completing research, preparation for class and assignment work.
What can I do when I complete the course?
Suffolk New College supports the progress of students from one level of study to the next. Providing you meet the entry requirements you are guaranteed an offer of progression to the next level of study.
What are the costs?
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay a £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.
Will I have to pay any additional costs?
There are some additional costs, which relate to trips including team-building and outdoor activities. All students will be required to pay £155 on enrolling towards trips. Other trips will be organised at further costs, which will be kept to a minimum.
There will be a charge of £30 for resources which includes the core text book (which we obtain at a discounted rate). Students may be asked to contribute to visits and additional qualifications.
What Support is Available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link - Student Support. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books.
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting the Information Team.
Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.
