Uniformed Public Services
Case Study
“I’d heard good things about the College. As I was keen to join public services the National Diploma was ideal. I’ve enjoyed the course, it’s given me lots of skills that I can use in any walk of life and it’s given me a good insight about the public services and how they integrate with each other.
As part of an assignment we went on an expedition where we did water sports and camp craft. This enabled us to use the skills that we had learnt in our theory based classes. The course has taught me that its important to ‘get life experience’ so I’ve decided rather than applying to join the police force at this time, to study for a BSc in Radiography at UCS. I do still hope to join the police force in the future where I will be able to put the experience of both courses to good use.”

National Diploma in Public Services
In today’s ever increasing threat to public safety the Public Services are becoming more prominent in the eyes of the public. As a result they are constantly under scrutiny and there is increasing pressure to perform at the very highest of standards.
The uniformed services cover a wide range of occupational areas, such as the police, the military, HM Customs and the fire service. Each of these occupational areas offers a wide range of opportunities for individuals to develop themselves personally and professionally.
The First Diploma and National Diploma courses aim to offer a thoroughly balanced and rounded experience that will equip you with the necessary fundamental knowledge and skills to prepare you for entry into the uniformed services. In addition, of major importance is the manner and nature of how the course is conducted. This is in relation to the pastoral care delivered that promotes and engenders a better understanding of this critical area in the Public Services of today.
The Curriculum Centre has strong links with the Royal Navy, the Police, the Fire Service and the Royal Marines, who all support the delivery of the courses. These links with public services professionals will help you in making informed choices about your future development and career.
As a student on one of these courses, you can expect to receive the highest standards of teaching and support from a highly qualified and committed team of lecturers. At the last Ofsted Inspection (February 2006) the Public Services provision within the curriculum centre was judged to be outstanding, where students make very relevant and focused contributions to discussions, and ‘their written work is generally of a high standard’.
