Is this the right course for me?
This full-time programme of study is designed to provide a sound grounding of knowledge for those planning a career in the travel and tourism industry. This course gives an exciting insight into the fast moving world of travel tourism.
What do I need to join the course?
Normally a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C and above or a First Diploma with a pass profile or equivalent qualification in a related area with a key skill at Level 1.
What does the course involve?
For the full qualification to be gained, eighteen units must be successfully completed. These include The Travel and Tourism Industry, The Business of Travel and Tourism, Tourist Destinations, Customer Service, Marketing, Retail Travel Operations, The Cruise Sector, Visitor Attractions, Tourism Development plus other related units. Each of the units is related to the world of work and there are several trips organised during the course to enable students to carry out research. The course team has extensive links with local employers in the area and they provide an excellent range of opportunities for students to experience how the theory can be put into practice.
The key skill units of communication and information technology are an integral part of the course and provide students with the necessary skills for work.
There will also be the opportunity to retake GCSE English and Maths (students need to have a grade D) and undertake additional units to build up the course such as The NCFE Certificate for Resort Representatives. First Aid At Work is also available as an extra qualification.
How will I be assessed?
All BTEC National Diplomas are assessed through course work. There is a variety of assignments which can include presentations, group work and displays. The assessment will be based on the timeliness and competence of the portfolio of work submitted. Work is assessed on a pass, merit or distinction basis.
When does the term start?
This course will commence week beginning September 6th 2010.
How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?
Successful completion of this course will require a combination of self study and tutor directed study. Normally you will spend approx 22 hours of study every week.
What can I do when I complete the course?
There are opportunities to work for tour operators, tourist attractions and hospitality providers as well as event management employment. Those wishing to go on to complete a degree in tourism and related specialist areas would be in a great position to do so.
What are the costs? (This information is subject to change)
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay an £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.
Will I have to pay any additional costs?
There may be some costs if any study trips are taken - this could be up to £200. All students are asked to contribute at least £25 towards the cost of any trips.
What support is available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support). Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc.
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education. Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.
