Travel & Tourism
Case Study
“After one year studying AS levels at 6th Form I realised this was not the route I wanted to go down. I knew I wanted to work in the travel industry so decided to enrol at Suffolk New College on the National Diploma in Travel and Tourism.
College offers a more relaxed atmosphere than school and the tutors are really friendly. I’ve learnt loads about the business side of the travel and tourism industry, there’s definitely more to it than just going on holiday! The course helped me to get a part-time job working for Fred Olsen. I’ve applied to university to study for a degree in Tourism Management. I’ve really enjoyed the course and don’t want it to end!”

National Diploma in Travel and Tourism
This exciting area of study gives you the opportunity to find out about an industry which is competitive and is constantly trying to find that magic formula that means people have a great experience whether that is a world cruise or a day trip to Pleasurewood Hills.
There are many areas of study in travel and tourism including the cruise sector, resort representatives, tour operations, retail operations, marketing, visitor attractions and the business of the industry to name but a few. Access to this information gives everyone the
chance to develop their research skills through using a variety of sources such as visits, brochures, websites and information from a range of tourism organisations. You will find out where different places are in the world, which area is being developed to become the number one visitor attraction and which type of holiday will be the most popular next year. You will also learn business skills such as customer service techniques to equip you for the working environment.
Visits are arranged to different destinations such as the Suffolk Heritage Coast, Snape Maltings, Sutton Hoo, the London Eye, Norwich and Cambridge. Local organisations provide a good introduction to the different areas of employment within travel and tourism including Fred Olsen, The National Trust, The Salthouse Harbour Hotel and Ipswich Borough Council within the Tourist Information Centre.
Students who achieve the Diploma have the opportunity to progress onto higher education, studying for degrees locally or at another chosen university. A ‘residential’ is arranged and organised by students as part of the course. Past destinations have included Disneyland Paris, Centre Parcs, Blackpool, Mallorca and Cornwall.
