Is this the right course for me?
This is a one year course for students whose first language is not English and who need help to improve their English (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
The course aims to help you improve your English skills, as well as learning about life in this country.
It will help you to find and apply for jobs or move on to other courses in the college. You will work towards these qualifications:
- Functional English, Maths & ICT
- Certificate in Personal & Social Development
- A Vocational Award
What does the course involve?
The course has 3 parts. These are:
- Functional Skills
- Personal & Social Development
- Vocational Option.
Functional Skills
- English (Entry Level – Level 2)
- Maths (Entry Level – Level 2)
- Information & Communication Technology Entry Level – Level 2 (using computers)
Edexcel Certificate in Personal & Social Development (Entry Level 3)
- Working towards goals
- Working as part of a group
- Healthy living
- Managing own money
- Making informed career progression choices
- Government and justice in the UK
- Rights and responsibilities of a citizen in a democracy
- Opportunities in learning and work
Vocational taster
- Award in hospitality
What do I need to join the course?
There are no formal entry requirements.
The course is for students who speak English as an additional language whose language skills make it difficult to get on other courses in the college.
Everyone who applies has an interview to find out what they need.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the course and will create a portfolio of evidence.
There will be short assessments to complete.
There will be examinations at the end of the course.
When does the course start?
The course starts week beginning 6 September 2010.
How many hours a week do I have to attend College?
This is a full time course for 16 hours per week. You may also be expected to do some work in your own time.
What can I do when I finish the course?
The course aims to help you move from one level of study to the next. If you pass the course this will help you move to the next level of study on one of the courses offered at Suffolk New College.
As this course is at entry Level, you could move on to a level 1 course the following year.
What are the costs?
There are no tuition fees for eligible students aged 16-18. We will talk about this at your guidance session before the course starts.
What support is there for me?
We will talk to you at the interview to find out if you have any support needs.
People on benefits should ask for help from Admissions or The Link – Student Support.
You might be able to get help with costs from the Learner Support Fund to help pay for things you need like text books or uniforms.
Suffolk New College gives help for learners with learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties/disabilities.

As this course is full time, you may be able to get Education Maintenance Allowance. This is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to help young people aged 16, 17 and 18 in full time education. You should also be able to get an application form from your school or Connexions or from the Information Team.
