Is this the right course for me?
This is a full-time 10 week course designed for 16 – 19 year olds who have finished compulsory fulltime education but who have subsequently opted out of a course at a sixth form or FE College or who are not currently in education or training. If you have found yourself on the wrong course or are simply not sure what you want to do, whatever your reasons, this is a course you can start at anytime and is a chance for you to:
- Gain a nationally recognised qualification.
- Reconsider your options for the next academic year.

What do I need to join the course?
There are no formal entry requirements. Acceptance onto the course is dependent upon an informal interview.
Course Summary:
The aim of Work Skills is to enable learners to develop the skills needed in any workplace, build confidence and gain an internationally recognised BTEC qualification. It is a new qualification that has been developed following wide-ranging consultation with school, colleges, training providers and employers to help learner develop the key skills that employers are looking for.
What does the course involve?
You will complete the following units:
- Working in a team
- Self assessment
- Career progression
- Applying for a job
- Preparing for an interview
- Interview skills
- Managing your own money
- Planning and running an enterprise activity
You will attend all classes with the same group, with a maximum of 16 students per group.
Advice and Guidance
As part of the course, you will have at least two tutorials with a personal tutor and two consultations with Connexions. We will endeavour to give you the support and guidance needed to help you make a successful transition to a full time course.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is in the form of coursework which you will complete during class time. This may include; PowerPoint presentations, research, formal letter writing, CV writing, form filling, mock interviews, self reflection, evaluation and group work.
Other opportunities
You will attend vocational taster sessions every week in a variety of areas across the College.
As part of the Working in a Team and Setting up and Running an Enterprise Units, you will take part in a group project for which there is start-up funding available and you will also have the opportunity to go on an outdoor team building day trip, also fully-financed.
When does the course start?
Courses start at various points throughout the academic year.
How many hours a week do I have to attend College?
This is a full time course that lasts for 10 weeks. You will be required to attend 13 hours of classes each week and do some private study.
What can I do when I complete the course?
We will endeavour to help find a suitable course for you to start on the following September. We will also refer students to Skills for Life to do literacy and numeracy, where appropriate. We will look for other alternatives that are available at the time.
What are the costs?
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable.
What support is available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link – Student Support. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc.
The course is classed as full time so eligible students will be able to receive the EMA. (Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education.
