Is this the right course for me?
This exciting new course is ideal if you are interested in working within the music industry but do not necessarily have any practical instrumental skills. It focuses on the business side of the industry, in particular the recording, promoting and marketing of music products.
A BTEC National Diploma equates to three full ‘A’ levels with the equivalent UCAS points for progression to Higher Education.
If you are dead set on a career in music and also have a head for business, this course is the perfect alternative.
What do I need to join the course?
Normally a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above (including English), or a First Diploma (or equivalent). You should be able to show evidence of a strong interest in music, usually through your extra-curriculum activities. You must be able to work as part of a dedicated creative team.
What does the course involve?
Our team of expert musicians and technicians will give you a thorough grounding in areas such as:
- Using the latest computer technology to record music in the studio and during live performances
- Mixing and mastering tracks to a professional standard
- Planning for and providing live sound expertise for various events
- Writing your own music and lyrics
- Promoting and marketing different types of musical products (events, bands, artists, CD’s)
- Managing the financial aspects of music events
There will also be opportunities to work with other students across Creative Arts and Media on projects such as pop videos, animation soundtracks and VJ-ing.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment on this course is made in a variety of ways, including practical performances, written work and video presentation. Most of the assessment of students’ work is continuous and carried out by tutors – in this way students receive constant feedback on their progress. The outcome of this assessment is confirmed on an annual basis by the Standards Moderator from BTEC.
When does term start?
This course will commence week beginning September 6th 2010.
How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?
Attendance for this full time course is for 20 hours a week - students will be expected to study in their own time for at least another 10 hours per week.
What can I do when I complete the course?
Upon completing this course you will be ideally placed to begin any one of a range of careers available within the music industry such as Music Management, Teaching and Production. Those wishing to go on to complete a specialist music or performing arts degree will also be in a great position.
What are the costs?
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay a £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.
Will I have to pay any additional costs?
There is a course specific charge £60 for essential Trips and Visits and a further £30 for Materials.
What support is available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support). Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc.
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting The Link (Student Support).
Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.
