Is this the right course for me?
The IMI Technical Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – Motor Cycle is part of a suite of qualifications recognised by the Automotive Industry.
This course is designed to introduce you to a variety of skills necessary to build a career in the industry. You will learn a range of skills including working safely, effectively, efficiently while maintaining and repairing motorcycles in a workshop environment. Normally those wishing to train for this industry would start on level 1 to gain the basic skills.
All teaching will take place in our fully equipped workshops and classrooms under guidance from qualified and experienced staff.
You must pass all practical and theory elements of the programme to achieve this nationally recognised qualification.
This is a full-time one-year course.
What do I need to join the course?
- IMI Award in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – Motor Cycle (or equivalent qualification) and achievement of Key Skills Communications and Application of
Number at level 1.
- A satisfactory interview with a course tutor
- Progressing students must provide a character reference from a current personal
tutor/course tutor
- Mature students not meeting the above qualification criteria will be considered on their individual merits
What does the course involve?
You will study the following units that will equip you with a variety of skills required for the Automotive Industry and give an appreciation of the techniques used by the modern motorcycle technician.

Unit G2 Ensure Your Own Actions Reduce Risk to Health & Safety
Unit G3 Maintain Positive Working Relationships
Unit MR01MC Carry Out Routine Motorcycle Maintenance
Unit MR02MC Remove and Replace Motorcycle Engine Units & Components
Unit MR03MC Remove and Replace Motorcycle Auxiliary Electrical Units &
Components
Unit MR04MC Remove and Replace Motorcycle Chassis Units & Components
Unit MR05G Conduct Pre and Post Work Vehicle Inspections
In addition students may complete Key Skills in Communication, ICT and Application of Number.
Can I take additional qualifications?
In addition to your main qualification you may have the opportunity to achieve further qualifications by undertaking short courses such as First Aid.
How will I be assessed?
Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards.
The student’s knowledge is assessed by IMIA set practical assessments, ‘on-line’ multiple-choice testing and a short written question paper.
When does term start?
This course will commence week beginning 6 September 2010.
How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?
Successful completion of this course will require a combination of tutor-directed study and private study. Normally you will spend 17 hours of tutor-directed study delivered over 4 days each week.
Students are expected to complete coursework, revise for exams and carryout research outside of their normal college hours.
What can I do when I complete the course?
This course provides the opportunity for successful candidates to progress to other full-time, or part-time study in motor vehicle subjects.
What are the costs?
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay an £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.
Will I have to pay any additional costs?
You will need overalls and appropriate safety footwear for use in the workshops. Other equipment needed will include writing materials, A4 folder, A4 dividers and A4 clear project wallets.
What Support is Available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support) on (01473) 382800. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc.
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting The Link (Student Support).
Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.
