Is this the right course for me?

This one year, full-time course provides a general introduction to the subject of Media and offers grounding in many of the key areas.  It is a dynamic and interesting course that is suitable for candidates who have little or no experience of Media but lots of enthusiasm.  Successful completion of this course, can provide progression onto the National Diploma in Media.

 

What do I need to join the course?

Normally a GCSE grade D profile with the successful completion of a specific written task and a clear interest and enthusiasm for Media.  Ideally, applicants will have a grade C or above in English.

 

What does the course involve?

The course is made up of a series of projects designed to cover all aspects of Media in a practical and exciting way. You will get to create video and radio adverts, produce short films, music videos and present shows on the student radio station SNC Live! and work in the TV Studio.  You will also study Radio Production for and NCFE certificate.

  • Writing for the Media
  • Media Production Project

 

The emphasis of the course is on practical Media production and reflects industry practices.

 

How will I be assessed?

Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards.  Students provide evidence of their development of knowledge and skills through compiling a portfolio of course work which includes written assignment and practical projects.

 

When does term start?

This course will commence week beginning September 6th 2010.

 

How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?

 

Successful completion of the course will rely on tutor directed study and private study.  Normally you will have 20 hours of tutor directed study and 17 hours of private study per week.

 

What can I do when I complete the course?

Suffolk New College supports the progress of students from one level of study to the next.  Providing you meet the entry requirements you are guaranteed an offer of progression to the National Diploma in Media.

 

What are the costs?

Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay a £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.

 

Will I have to pay any additional costs?

An additional cost of £50.00 will need to be paid at enrolment for educational trips and photographic video/materials.

 

What Support is available for me?

People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support).  Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc. 

Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education.   Further information and how to apply may be found on the EMA website at http//ema.direct.gov.uk or by calling the helpline on 0800 121 8989. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting The Link (Student Support).

Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.  Further information and details of how you can apply can be found on the ALG website at: www.direct.gov.uk/alg or by calling the learndirect advice line on 0800 100 900.  Application packs are also available from the College.
