CASE STUDY

“As I want to become a radio broadcaster I was advised to get a media qualification. So I returned as a mature student. Having been at college previously and really enjoyed it, I was not concerned about going back. The course has been brilliant. I’ve used various equipment, made a five minute drama for TV and hosted a TV style quiz show. I’ve also presented on the College radio station, which has given me a good insight into how a station runs. I would certainly recommend the course to anyone wanting to get a good background in media. The tutors are fantastic; they have all worked in the media industry so know what they are talking about.

During my second year I’m looking to get a work placement and move forward into the broadcasting industry.”

National Diploma in Media

Media as a subject to study is not about sitting and watching the TV … It’s about doing … getting stuck in and getting on with it. TV, Radio, Video, Photography, these are the areas that you will become skilled in as you progress through this subject.

Our media courses are packed with hands-on experience blended with theory in order to develop your knowledge and skills. You will gain an insight into the media industries and the variety of jobs that are available. These include radio presenting/producing, television camera work, writing, directing, music video producing/directing, editing and designing, to name but a few.

During your time with us you will develop a range of practical skills as diverse as screenplay writing, film/television lighting and camerawork, directing actors, photography and radio production. Through a series of projects you will be encouraged to produce exciting, innovative and entertaining work.

The courses are divided into a set of projects that run over the year - video, documentary, short dramas, music projects and radio production. Depending on the level of course and the area you specialise in, you will have the opportunity to produce and present your own show on the in-house student radio station SCAM Radio.

You will also have the opportunity to work with real clients, this year students have created music videos for Copper Pilot, Pity the Fool, Rosalita, as well as staging a live ‘Jools Holland’ event which they promoted, booked artists and filmed live.

The course demands hard work, maturity and self-discipline. Students must be self-motivated and able to work both as an individual and part of a team, but those who do rise to the challenge find it extremely rewarding and, most of all, fun.
