Health & Social Care
Case Study
“I chose Health & Social Care as I want to go into Nursing and felt the course would give me some understanding of what nursing is all about. Suffolk New College was also convenient to my home. The course has been interesting and I’ve learnt a lot. As well as the main units I’ve obtained an additional certificate in First Aid and been on work experience with RDA. The tutors have been supportive and help me to progress. I’ve made loads of new friends. Having passed Level 1, I’m now going on to Level two and looking forward to the various work placements.”

The Health and Social Care Sector covers a wide range of occupational areas and settings. The Health and Social Care profession is all about meeting people’s needs and providing appropriate care for them so that they can lead as full and active lives as is possible.
The health sector professions mainly deal with preventive care, illness, disease and medical care across a range of settings, including hospitals, GP practices, family planning clinics, oral health clinics and dental practices. The social care sector professions mainly deal with the support services such as social services, residential care, and youth and community work. Health and Social Care services are funded by the state, privately run, or supported by voluntary organisations.
The Curriculum Centre has a long established partnership with employers in the local area, and once enrolled on a Health and Social Care course you will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of work placements in the areas identified above. This will give you the opportunity to build on your existing knowledge and experience, and to develop understanding and confidence in dealing with people in different settings across the sector. You can expect to receive the highest standards of teaching and support from a highly qualified and committed team of lecturers. At the last Ofsted Inspection (February 2006) the Health and Social Care provision within the Curriculum Centre was judged to be outstanding, where learners work well together in lessons and ‘make excellent progress relative to their prior attainment’.
