 Is this the right course for me?

This is a one-year full-time course for those students who wish to gain a professional qualification in Beauty Therapy and enter employment in to the industry.  A variety of advanced beauty skills are studied within extensive salon sessions.  These sessions enable practical skills development using a wide range of equipment within a commercial environment.  Students should have enthusiasm, commitment, be able to communicate effectively with clients and have a genuine desire to reach the highest professional standard.

 What do I need to join the course?

You normally need NVQ 2 Beauty Therapy or equivalent.

 What does the course involve?

You will have nine units to complete at level 3.  Three theory units, covering health and safety and promoting products, may be accredited from your studies at level 2.  In addition you will study how to contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business.

There will be active client sessions for you to develop advanced skills in a range of practical treatments including head and body massage techniques and epilation (permanent hair removal using a small needle).  A wide range of modern salon equipment will enhance your ability to improve the clients face and body condition with well-known industry techniques such as non-surgical lifting and Micro dermabrasion.  In addition you will gain insight and skills in self tanning and individual semi permanent lash extensions.  Your service to clients will be strengthened by the thorough home care and retail advice that will form part of your training.

Your commitment to developing a professional ethic of working is essential.  Significant commitment to study to develop understanding of complex information is also required.

 How will I be assessed?

Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards. 

Practical skills will be assessed throughout the course in a commercial setting in the salon.  Your underpinning knowledge will be tested through written tests, oral questioning, written assignment work, photographic evidence and client reports.

 Other opportunities

You will attend the Clothes Show in Birmingham and may take part in a series of outside events such as the Suffolk Show, fashion shows and exhibitions representing the Hairdressing, Beauty and Beauty Therapy Curriculum Centre.

There are workshops and demonstrations from visiting companies such as Dermalogica  and Steiner to give you extra product knowledge and retail training.

 Can I take any additional qualifications?

Functional skills are included in your programme.  They are designed to enhance your current knowledge and equip you with skills that are required for employment in today’s Beauty industry.

 When does term start?

Week commencing Monday 6 September 2010.

 How many hours per week do I have to attend College?

Normally you will spend 13 hours of tutor directed study.  Students are expected to study, practice skills and produce written work outside of this time.  Normally 3 additional hours are dedicated to the development of your functional skills qualifications.

 What can I do when I complete the course?

Examples of employment possibilities include salons, in-flight therapies, Health Spas, Cruise Liners, leisure facilities, and department stores.

 What are the costs?  (This information is subject to change)

No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay a £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.

 Will I have to pay any additional costs?

You will be required to purchase one beauty therapy kit to support your skills practice, estimated cost £75.00.  Additional cost for uniform may be necessary if you need to replace your level 2 uniform.  There is a resource fund of £70.00 to support mandatory trips, plus a refundable locker deposit of £10.00

 What Support is Available for me?

People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link - Student Support. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books. 

 Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education.   Further information and how to apply may be found on the EMA website at http//ema.direct.gov.uk or by calling the helpline on 0800 121 8989. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting the Information Team.

 Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.  Further information and details of how you can apply can be found on the ALG website at: www.direct.gov.uk/alg or by calling the learndirect advice line on 0800 100 900.  Application packs are also available from the College.
