Is this the right course for me?
This one-year course is designed to offer hairdressers who have gained a NVQ level 2 in Hairdressing who wish to extend their skills to an advanced commercial level. It is recommended that to support your practical development during your course you are working practically within a hairdressing salon.
What do I need to join the course?
A full NVQ 2 level qualification in Hairdressing, equivalent level 2 qualification or current practical salon experience.
What does the course involve?
Advanced skills in the technical units of Hairdressing and extended development in the units related to the everyday running of a Hairdressing salon.
Mandatory Units:
G22 Monitor procedures to safety control work operations
G18 Promote additional products or services to clients
G21 Provide hairdressing consultation services
GH16 Create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques
Optional Units :
There are 5 optional units that you must achieve suitable units will be negotiated with your tutor according to your needs.
GH21 Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
GH19 Creatively Style and dress hair
GH20 Creatively Dress long hair
GH17 Colour hair using a variety of techniques
GH18 Provide Colour correction services
GH22 Create a Variety of Permed Effects
G19 Support customer service improvements
G11 Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
H32 Contribute to the planning and implementation of the promotional activities
How will I be assessed?
Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards. You will be assessed by continuous assessment for the practical subjects. Most evidence will be provided by:
- Observation of performance
- Oral questioning of the knowledge and understanding
- A portfolio or file of supplementary or supporting materials e.g. written questions, projects or assignments, witness logs etc.

Week commencing 6 September 2010.
How many hours per week do I have to attend college?
Normally you will spend 13 hours of tutor directed study every week relating to hairdressing. There is also 3 hours per week on additional studies such as Functional Skills. Students are expected to practice their skills and produce written work outside of this time in order to progress and develop at a sufficient rate to achieve the full qualification.
What can I do when I complete the course?
Upon completion of this course you will have all the advanced skills required to work as a senior stylist in a salon, or as a stylist on board a cruise ship, or work as a stylist within the T.V or theatre industries or alternatively open or manage a hairdressing salon.
What are the course costs?
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay a £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.
Will I have to pay any additional costs?
You will be expected to have all your basic equipment from your level 2 skills, you will need to purchase and additional kit £103.00
Mandatory Uniform approx: £45.00
Order forms will be available for uniform and equipment on enrolment.
What support is available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link - Student Support. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books.
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting the Information Team.
Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.
