You normally need 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, or Diploma Level 1 (NVQ) Certificate in Hairdressing.

 What does the course involve?

In our salons you will receive support and instruction on how a busy salon works.  You will work in a real salon carrying out all services in our salons.  Some of the activities will include:

  • Maintaining health and safety in a hairdressing salon
  • Advise and consult with your client
  • Promoting yourself and your salon
  • Promote additional products or services to clients
  • Managing a reception area
  • Greeting clients
  • Shampooing and conditioning clients hair
  • Colouring hair

There will also be a considerable amount of self study relating to revision for exams and assignment work.  Practicing the skills you have learned on friends and family at home in order to prepare you for assessment is essential alongside a real desire to enter the hairdressing profession.

Can I take any additional qualifications?

Integrated into the course are Functional skills qualifications at Level 1 or 2 in Communication, Application or ICT.  These are designed to enhance your current skills and equip you with the skills needed to work in today’s Hairdressing industry.

 How will I be assessed?

Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards.  There are ten units to achieve in this award.  Practical assessments are on a continual basis during sessions in our salons at Suffolk New College, where you will be attending to paying clients for services such as cutting, colouring, blow-drying etc.  In addition, unit assignments, oral questions and written assessment occur so that you can demonstrate your full knowledge and understanding of each unit in Diploma Level 2 (NVQ) Hairdressing.

How many hours per week do I have to attend College?

Normally you will spend 13 hours of tutor directed study every week relating to hairdressing.  There is also 3 hours per week on additional studies such as functional skills.  Students are expected to practice their skills and produce written work outside of this time in order to progress and develop at a sufficient rate to achieve the full qualification.

What can I do when I complete the course?

This qualification will help you to progress into full time employment in either a salon or as a freelance hairdresser.  Further opportunities exist for you to return to train in Diploma Level 3 (NVQ) Hairdressing providing you had some industry employment to support your development.
