Is this the right course for me?

This is a level 2 course in Hair and Beauty studies.

The Higher Diploma aims to:

 

  • Give you the basic knowledge and science of the Hairdressing and Beauty therapy industry
  • Enable students to investigate wider specialist subject areas within Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
  • Include qualifications for students to complete in English, Maths and ICT skills, related to the chosen subject area.
  • Introduce students into the real working environment of the Hair and Beauty Industry. There will be a minimum of 10 days work-related placement within this course.
  • Explore opportunities that exist within Hairdressing and Beauty therapy industries

 

What do I need to join the course?

You will need five GSCEs at grade D or above, including Maths and English.

 

What does the course involve?

The course involves three main areas, Principal learning, Generic learning and Specialist learning.

 

Principal Learning relates to the hair and Beauty industry. It includes investigating what skills are required within the sector, creating a positive impression of yourself and the workplace and developing positive communication skills.  In addition there are other topic areas which include some practical skills in basic hairstyling, skin, and nail care.

 

In addition to the principal learning a minimum of 10 days work experience within the sector is completed.

 

Generic learning includes achieving functional skills qualifications in English, Maths and ICT to support general life skills and professional requirements.

 

Specialist learning is negotiated with your tutors and could include skills such as

dressing and styling hair, nail art or make up.

 

How will I be assessed? 

Suffolk New College will plan your assessments and examinations with an external examining board.   Assessments are through a combination of internally assessed assignments and external tests.  Work placement will be planned and assessed by tutors.

 

When does term start?

Week commencing Monday 6 September 2010.

 

How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?

This is a full time course. Normally your timetable spans over four days per week at college plus one day of self directed study. Your 10 day work-related experience may be in addition to this attendance pattern.

 

What can I do when I complete the course?

 

You could progress to an Advanced Diploma or a relevant vocational Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy qualification at level 3.

 

What are the costs?  (This information is subject to change)

 

The course fee is yet to be confirmed.

 

Will I have to pay any additional costs?

You will require a starter kit that will include basic Beauty and Hair equipment.  Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when carrying out practical work. A text book to support your chosen course will be recommended, estimated at £25.00.

 

What Support is Available for me?

People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link - Student Support. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books. 

 Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education.   Further information and how to apply may be found on the EMA website at http//ema.direct.gov.uk or by calling the helpline on 0800 121 8989. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting the Information Team.
