Is this the right course for me?

The BTEC National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is part of a suite of qualifications recognised by the Engineering Industry.

This course is designed to introduce you to the skills necessary to build a career in the electrical/electronic engineering industry. You will learn a range of skills including working safely, effectively, and efficiently in an electrical/electronic engineering environment.

 

All teaching will take place in our fully equipped workshops, laboratories and classrooms under guidance from qualified and experienced staff.

 

You must pass all practical and theory elements of the programme to achieve this nationally recognised qualification.

 

This is a full-time two-year course.

 

What do I need to join the course?

  • BTEC First Diploma in an appropriate area of study (or equivalent

      qualification) OR

  • A profile of GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, Science and

     Mathematics

  • A satisfactory interview with a course tutor
  • Progressing students must provide a character reference from a personal

      tutor/course tutor

  • Mature students not meeting the above qualification criteria will be considered on their individual merits

Can I take additional qualifications?

In addition to your main qualification you may have the opportunity to achieve further qualifications by undertaking short courses such as First Aid.

 

How will I be assessed?

Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards.

 

The course will be assessed by a combination of practical work, assignments and timed assessments.

 

When does term start?

This course will commence week beginning 6 September 2010.

 

How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?

Successful completion of this course will require a combination of tutor-directed study and private study. Normally you will spend 17 hours of tutor-directed study delivered over 4 days each week.

 

Students are expected to complete coursework, revise for exams and carryout research outside of their normal college hours.

 

What can I do when I complete the course?

This course provides the opportunity for successful candidates to progress to Higher Education.

 

What are the costs? 

Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay an £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.

 

Will I have to pay any additional costs?

You will need a scientific calculator, writing materials, A4 folder, A4 dividers and A4 clear project wallets etc.

 

What Support is Available for me?

People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support) on (01473) 382800. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc. 

 

Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education.   Further information and how to apply may be found on the EMA website at http//ema.direct.gov.uk or by calling the helpline on 0800 121 8989. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting The Link (Student Support).

 

Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.  Further information and details of how you can apply can be found on the ALG website at: www.direct.gov.uk/alg or by calling the learndirect advice line on 0800 100 900.  Application packs are also available from the College.
