Is this the right course for me?

 

The City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Basic Plumbing Skills is part of a suite of qualifications recognised by the Plumbing Industry. This course is designed to provide you with a range of plumbing skills necessary to build a career in the industry. You will learn how to fit radiators and bathroom suites, join copper pipe and shape lead flashings.

 

All teaching will take place in our fully equipped workshops and classrooms under guidance from qualified and experienced staff.

 

You must pass all practical and theory elements of the programme to achieve this nationally recognised qualification.

 

This is a full-time two year course.

 

What do I need to join the course?

 

  • Four GCSEs at grade D or above including English Language and Mathematics OR
  • Key Skills at Level 1 in Application of Number and Communications
  • Achievement of the BPEC pre-entrance assessment and a practical exercise.
  • A satisfactory interview with course tutor
  • Progressing students must provide a character reference from a current personal tutor/course tutor.
  • Mature students not meeting the above qualification criteria will be considered on their individual merits.

 

What does the course involve?

Can I take any additional qualifications?

 

In addition to your main qualification you may have the opportunity to achieve further qualifications by undertaking short courses such as First Aid.

How will I be assessed? 

 

Suffolk New College offers a flexible approach to assessment whilst maintaining rigorous standards.

 

The technology incorporated into the individual units is assessed through multiple choice questions in 11 computer based City & Guilds tests. A final GOLA examination is used to test all of the knowledge.

 

Practical skills are assessed on an ongoing basis with final ‘Skills Tests’ carried out at the end of the programme and performance judged against the Plumbing Industry standards.

 

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) - This course is approved to offer the assessment and accreditation of learning gained through experience - previous or current - which may contribute to the award of a partial or complete qualification.

 

When does term start?

 

This course will commence week beginning 6 September 2010.

 

How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?

 

Successful completion of this course will require a combination of tutor-directed study and private study. Normally you will spend 17 hours of tutor-directed study delivered over two and a half days every week.

 

Students are expected to complete course work, revise for exams and carry out research outside of their normal college hours.

 

What can I do when I complete the course?

 

Suffolk New College supports the progress of students from one level of study to the next. Providing you meet the entry requirements you are guaranteed an offer of progression to the next level of study.

What are the costs?

 

Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay an £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration fees.

 

Will I have to pay any additional costs?

 

You will need to buy overalls and protective footwear for the course.

What support is available for me?

 

People on means-tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support) on (01473) 382800. Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. textbooks, uniforms, etc.

 

Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over while in full-time education. Application packs are also available from the College.
