CASE STUDY

“Whilst at school I did work experience in a playgroup and really enjoyed it, so chose to enrol on the level 2 course in Childcare at Suffolk New College rather than staying on at school. I’ve progressed from this on to level 3. This year I’ve studied keeping Children Safe Legislation, Out-door Play and the Theory of Childcare. Level 3 is hard work, more so than level 2, but it’s been good and I’ve gained lots of knowledge. The placements have helped me to understand the professional side of childcare. I would recommend Suffolk New College for the wide range of courses it offers. When I’ve finished the second year I’m hoping to go to UCS to take an Early Years degree.”

From the start, children have the right to receive the highest quality care and education. Therefore professionals working with children need to be able to support and care for children according to their individual needs.

The childcare and early years sector is wide ranging and includes provision across the health sector, care sector and in education. Health sector professions include preventative care, dealing with illness and disease, and are based in settings such as paediatric units, maternity units, antenatal and postnatal units, GP practices and health visitor clinics. Professionals within the care sector work within day nurseries, family centres and provision led by social services teams, as well as after-school clubs, play centres and holiday clubs. And of course, children receive education through provision funded by the state, at private schools and through home tuition, all of which require the skills of dedicated and appropriately qualified childcare professionals.

The Curriculum Centre is the lead provider of childcare training in Suffolk. We actively support students through work placements in Childcare and Early Years. The Centre is well resourced, including its own training nursery and the team of lecturers are highly qualified and occupationally competent to deliver the courses on offer.

Work placements will give you the opportunity to build on your existing knowledge and experience, and to develop understanding and confidence in dealing with people in different settings across the childcare and early years sector.

Student success within this area is very high and at the last Ofsted Inspection (February 2006) Childcare and Early Years provision within this Curriculum Centre was judged to be outstanding, with well planned lessons, effective tutorial support, and with ‘achievement and standards that are outstanding’.
