AS/A Level Chemistry

AS/A LEVEL CHEMISTRY

Awarding Body: OCR

AS / A Level Chemistry

AS: 1 Year

A Level: 2 Years

Course subject Codes: CHES*, CHE2*

Is this the right course for me?

This subject is offered as part of the Full-Time A Level Programme. Please refer to the Full-Time A Level Course information sheet for further details.

Chemicals surround us, we breathe them in, we wear them, we eat them and we are made of them. AS Chemistry starts with a foundation module to help students gain a common level of basic chemical principles. Organic chemistry is introduced within the second module and a final module looking at physical chemistry completes the year.

A2 Chemistry extends the knowledge gained in AS and looks at further aspects of organic chemistry, biochemistry and trends within the periodic table. Students will find practical, hands on experience a valuable and enjoyable way to learn. Chemistry is a challenging science requiring strong academic ability, good practical and deductive skills. Practical work is undertaken in a well-equipped laboratory.

What do I need to join the course?

Standard programme requirements (minimum 5 grade C or above passes at GCSE)as per the Full-Time A Level Course Information Sheet, plus GCSE grade B or above in double science (or GCSE Chemistry) and GCSE grade C or above in Mathematics.

What does the course involve?

The course is divided into chemical topics, each containing different key concepts of Chemistry. Once the key features of a chemical topic have been developed, applications are considered. The teaching of practical skills is assessed separately.

  • This course has been developed in consultation with the Royal Society of Chemistry, GlaxoSmithKline and a large variety of teachers throughout the country.
  • There is an increased emphasis on understanding and application rather than recall.
  • There is straightforward assessment of practical skills.
  • The course builds upon the existing popular OCR Chemistry course. Has been updated in response to modern developments in chemistry and also the impact of chemistry on modern society and resources.

Units to be studied at AS

  • Atoms, Bonds and Groups
  • Chains, Energy and Resources
  • Practical Skills in Chemistry 1

Assessment

Two units at AS and A2 level are assessed through written examination. One unit at AS and A2 level is assessed through internal assessment. All written paper units are available in both January and June series. Practical skills units are available in the June series only.By employing the above we aim to encourage individual thought, increase individual potential and develop a group identity. It is expected that students on this course will in, addition to the taught hours, spend approximately two to three hours each week completing assignments outside class time.

What about further study after the AS?

The AS course in Chemistry is self-contained, but leads on to a second year of study (the A2). Module results in the AS and the A2 are combined to provide an ‘A’ level award after two years. To progress to A2 you will need to have the standard entry requirements for AS level, plus AS Chemistry at grade D. Students with AS at grade E will be considered on the basis of their capacity to make further progress as shown by attendance and work records and other evidence.

Units to be studied at A2

  • Rings, Polymers and Analysis
  • Equilibria, Energetics and Elements
  • Practical Skills in Chemistry 2

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by written and practical examination. All modules in A Level Chemistry are assessed externally. It is recommended that one module is taken in the January examination series. It is possible to re-sit modules once if necessary. The dates of all examinations are issued on joining the course.

What can I do when I complete the course?

Progression is generally to higher education and is often a requirement to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Environmental and Forensic Science and traditional Physical Sciences.

Additional Costs

None, other than those involved in optional trips to conferences or events relevant to Chemistry. You will be advised of a suitable textbook at the beginning of the course.
