AS and A Level Accounting

 Course subject code: ACCSE, ACC2C

Is this the right course for me?

This subject is offered as part of the Full-Time A Level Programme. Please refer to the Full-Time A Level Course information sheet for further details.

Even the best business ideas get nowhere without sound financial management. So whether you want to work for big business, be the next Richard Branson or have your own small business, knowledge of financial management is vital.

This Accounting course equips you with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to assess the performance of all types of business organisations. It will enable you to effectively analyse and evaluate financial data so that you can make judgements, decisions and recommendations about how businesses can manage their financial affairs.

What do I need to join the course?

Standard programme entry requirements, as per the Full-Time A Level Course Information Sheet.

What does the course involve?

The AS course involves the study of two separate units:

Unit 1 ACCN1

Introduction to Financial Accounting

This unit is designed as a foundation for the course and covers double-entry procedures as applied to the accounting systems of sole traders.

Unit 2 ACCN2

Financial and Management Accounting

This unit provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of financial accounting and introduces some of the ways in which financial accounting can provide valuable information for measuring and monitoring business performance and for planning future business operations.

What about further study after the AS

The AS course in Accounting is self-contained, but leads on to a second year of study (the A2).  Module results in the AS and the A2 are combined to provide an ‘A’ level award after two years.  To progress to A2 you will need to have the standard entry requirements for AS level, plus AS Accounting at grade D.  Students with AS at grade E will be considered on the basis of their capacity to make further progress as shown by attendance and work records and other evidence.

Key features of the A2 course in Accounting include:

Unit 3 ACCN3

Further Aspects of Financial Accounting

This unit is designed to develop further the financial accounting techniques acquired in AS Unit 1 ‘Introduction to Financial Accounting’.

Unit 4 ACCN4

Further Aspects of Management Accounting

This unit develops further the knowledge and understanding of management accounting techniques acquired in AS Unit 2 ‘Financial and Management Accounting’.
