Is this the right course for me?
This one year, full-time course provides a broad exploration of Art & Design and is suitable for students who have a keen interest and have taken Art at GCSE level but do not have the entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme.
Students are introduced to most Art & Design disciplines and are able to begin to specialize as the course progresses.
What do I need to join the course?
A GCSE grade D profile with the production of a suitable portfolio of recent varied work and a clear interest and enthusiasm for Art & Design. Ideally, applicants will have a grade C or above in Art and English.
What does the course involve?
The course is made up of 6 units:
- 2-D and 3-D Communication
- Vocational Context (Historical & Contemporary Art & Design studies)
- Explore & Develop Ideas – Final Major Project
- Produce Outcomes – Final Major Project
* The two specialist units (working to briefs) are selected from the following:
- Graphic Design
- Photography
- Fashion
- 3-D Design
- Multimedia
- Painting
- Design Crafts
- Animation
Can I take any additional qualifications?
Students studying this course will also study BTEC Award in Visual Arts, which is fully integrated into the course. Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT are developed as appropriate for each individual student.
How will I be assessed?
Most of the assessment of students’ work is continuous and carried out by tutors – in this way students receive constant feedback on their progress. The outcome of this assessment is confirmed on an annual basis by the Standards Moderator from BTEC. Some of the assessment will be based upon externally set tests.
When does term start?
This course will commence week beginning September 6th 2010.
How many hours per week do I have to attend College for?
Successful completion of this course will require a combination of private study and tutor directed study. There are 20 hours of tutor directed study per week which are timetabled over three and a half days.
What can I do when I complete the course?
Suffolk New College supports the progress of students from one level of study to the next. Providing you meet the entry requirements you are guaranteed an offer of progression to the National Diploma Art & Design course.
What are the costs?
Tuition Costs: No tuition fees are payable, however, those aged 19 and over at 31 August 2010 will pay a £1200 fee inclusive of external and internal registration.
Will I have to pay any additional costs?
There is a course specific charge of £35 for essential Trips and Visits and a further £35 for Materials pack.
What support is available for me?
People on means tested benefits should seek advice from Admissions or The Link (Student Support). Financial assistance may be available from the Learner Support Fund to help with essential items needed to support learning, e.g. text books, uniforms, etc.
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week to support young people aged 16, 17 and 18 while in full time education. You should also be able to get an application form from your school, Connexions or by contacting The Link (Student Support).
Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of up to £30 to support adults aged 19 or over whilst in full-time education.
