Suffolk College Trainees Win Construction Apprentice Accolade - 21 May 2004
Suffolk College trainees scooped 5 out of a possible 6 Apprentice of the Year awards at the recent Suffolk Joint Consultative Committee for Building event.
The Construction Trainee Award Scheme is contested by trainees nominated from the four Suffolk FE Colleges with the intention of identifying the best apprentices in each construction craft area in the county.
The winners are all locally employed and are:
• Dean Lait – Carpentry and Joinery – employed by Haymills (Contractors) Ltd
• Paul Rolph – Carpentry and Joinery – employed by Robert Norman Associates
• Joe Jones – Brickwork – employed by Cottrell Brickwork and Ceramics
• Chris Laflin – Painting and Decorating – employed by Reynolds and Rushden
• James Lorking – Painting and Decorating – employed by G. W. Younger
In addition, Paul Rolph was awarded the prestigious John Palmer Cup for the overall best Suffolk Construction Apprentice of the year.
Paul’s employer, Robert Norman, said, “Congratulations to Paul on winning Suffolk Apprentice of the year. This award is a reflection of his efforts and the team at Suffolk College together with his fellow craftsmen at Robert Norman Associates. Paul’s success highlights the companies commitment to quality construction.”
Steve Everitt, tutor for Paul Rolph, added, “Paul has a natural flair for carpentry and it’s good to see his skills recognised in this way”
This is a spectacular result for the trainees and reflects upon the quality of their education and training received at Suffolk College. Construction tutors were delighted with the news. Mark Green , tutor for Dean Lait , said “ I’m very pleased for Dean. It is a very well deserved award.”
All the trainees are currently studying for their NVQ award in their chosen craft area at Suffolk College and you can catch them displaying their skills at the Suffolk Skills stand at the Suffolk Show in June next month.
