New Degree in English at Suffolk College - 16 July 2004

NEW DEGREE IN ENGLISH AT SUFFOLK COLLEGE - 16 JULY 2004

Suffolk College has had a Single Honours degree in English on the Suffolk Modular Degree Programme successfully validated by the University of East Anglia, and will be accepting students for September 2004.

The new degree builds on the success of the Literary Studies degree at Suffolk College but has been expanded to include the study of language, film and hypertext and a broader historical span.

Students wishing to go into teaching will find the English language modules particularly useful. They will study the structures of English, the history of the language, issues of dialect and language varieties. They will also study literature from a range of periods and regions so that students can choose from, for example, modules on Shakespeare, Children’s Literature, The Victorian Age, Women’s Fiction, Postcolonial African Literature and Autobiography. There are film modules providing skills in analysing film and the study of documentary and feature films, and Internet modules providing opportunities to design and build hypertext documents.

The Single Honours degree in English will thus give students a whole range of experiences reflecting recent developments in the subject. English can also usefully be combined with Early Childhood Studies, History or Media Studies. Mature students are particularly welcome to apply and the College have a very good record in supporting students without traditional entry qualifications.
